Have you heard the rumors?  The rumors that there are thousands of "lost files" in the public domain that you can use to make tons of money?

Two weeks later it came in the mail and it was even more than I had originally hoped for.  I learned more from that course than I had in any other wrestling or strength training book that I had ever read. 

After buying that one book, I purchased five other "lost" strength training courses from the same company, sending them almost every dollar I earned during my senior year in high school.

Almost five years later, I had a friend tell me about something that he called the "Public Domain."  It was something that I had never heard of, and he explained it to me like this:

The "public domain" refers to anything that is NOT protected under US copyright law.  This includes ALL works published before 1923 AND, under certain conditions, works published up to 1978.  A "work" can be anything, a book, movies, plays, songs, photographs, instruction manuals, posters, courses, reports, etc.

He then went on to tell me that you could take these works, repackage them and sell them for a profit. 

When he told me about this, I really didn't care very much.  I couldn't see any way that I would benefit from the public domain, and so I almost ignored his comments completely. 

But that night when I was trying to fall asleep I thought about what he had said, and then it was almost like a bolt of lightning hit me...

I remembered my old wrestling course!

Was this course in the public domain?  I jumped out of bed, started to search for it online and was able to find an original copy of the wrestling course.  I paid a small fortune for it but, when it got to my door, I found out that it was indeed in the public domain!

Quickly I realized that this course (and the other courses that I had purchased) were all in the public domain. 

I started to research the guy who had sold me this course.  I discovered something very interesting about what he had been able to do with this one lost file.

He had earned over $1 million dollars in sales from this one book. 

Just think - all of this money came from a book that he didn't write.  All he did was go to a local copy center, made photocopies of the book, bound them together and sold them from his website!

Over $1,000,000 in sales from one "lost file."  Sound pretty exciting?

Before we get too deep into this, I want to give you a little background on exactly what public domain is.  Until recently, I had never even heard of the concept, and I'm sure that you may need some background also. 

"Public Domain" refers to things that are NOT protected under the US copyright law.   Things become public domain in quite a few ways. 

• The work was published before there was a copyright law
   

• The work's copyright protection expired
   

• Copyright protection was lost or never acquired for some reason
   

• The copyright owner dedicated the work into the public domain
   

• The work was never entitled to copyright protection
   

• The work was published by the government or its agents

If a work falls into any of these categories, then it's in the public domain, and you can use it any way that you want!   A "work" can be anything, a book, movie, play, song, photograph, instruction manual, poster, course, a report, etc.

There are almost an endless number of ways that you can make money with public domain content.  Let me suggest a few just to get the wheels in your head spinning. 

Idea #1 - Use Public Domain As A Source Of
Content For Your Website

You can use works that are in the public domain to create content for your webpage.  Here's how it works:

You just take the text of the public domain work which relates to a product you are selling or an affiliate program that you are promoting.  You then create web pages and include links back to your product page.  The search engines will feed off this content and drive targeted visitors to your products. 

You can also use these content pages to make a killing with your Google Adsense checks.  Just place Adsense on the content pages you create and let Google pay you to advertise on these pages. 

(HINT:  I'll even show you a software program you can use that will do all of this for you!  You just have to insert the public domain content, and it will output thousands of web pages optimized for driving traffic to your site and money to your bank account!)

You can also use images, artwork, music... Anything you find in the public domain for instant content on your websites!

Idea #2 - Re-publish Public Domain
Content Exactly As It Is!

Whether it's a book, a movie or even sheet music, you can take this content and quickly turn it into a product.  Just copy it as is, and start selling it.

This is what often what happens with books that are in the public domain.  You can get someone to scan the book and then send it off to the printer (or, better yet, sell it as an ebook).

Imagine publishing your own book.  It takes years to become an expert on a topic, then months to turn that knowledge into a book.  With a public domain book, it's already been researched and written.  All of the work has been done for you!

Idea #3 - Turn Public Domain Content
Into A NEW Product!

You can also use public domain content to create a "derivative" work.  This is when you take something from the public domain and create your own new product from it.   

Can you think of any companies doing this...? 

The most famous is Walt Disney. 

Do you think that Walt wrote Snow White, The Little Mermaid, or Sleeping Beauty? 

Nope - these were all stories from the public domain.  They took these "Lost Files" and turned them into a multi-billion dollar empire.

  Idea #4 - Change The Format To Increase Profits

This technique is a very exciting way to increase the perceived value of this content which will instantly put more money in your pocket.  I stumbled onto this idea after I shelled out almost $100 for a product. 

I wanted to read the famous "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill, but knew that I wouldn't have the time to read the book (which would only cost me about $12 at any book store). 

I decided to go and purchase the audio CD's of the book instead.  I paid almost $100 for these.  I was willing to pay more because it was in a more convenient format. 

Making an audio or video recording of a public domain work is a simple way to increase the value of the product. 

 Idea #5 - Do You Really Need More?

Ok - I realize that #4 was also a derivative work.  The problem is that any other idea would basically be some sort of derivative work. 

But, don't worry. That in no way hinders what you can do.  Check out about a half dozen other ways you can create derivatives out of pubic domain content:

• Turn a "how to" book into a "how to" training course
   

• Video clips to enhance your own videos projects
   

• Reports that you can use to get new subscribers for your ezine or newsletter
   

• Images for graphic work on your websites or other projects
   

• Government forms and documents in a wide variety of ways
   

• Sheet music for your own music book
   

• Words for lyrics to your next song

The list could go on and on...
 

That's a great question and the answer is simple.  Getting a public domain work ready to sell can be hard and expensive work.  Just look at the things that you have to do BEFORE you can start selling it:

1. You have to find the lost public domain files.  Forget about everything else.  If you don't have the product, then you can't start. 

2. You have to do copyright research to make sure that the work is in the public domain.  This either requires you to go and search for hours to find the copyright information or hire an attorney to do it for you.  Very costly and time consuming. 

3. You have to scan the books to put them into digital format.  If you want to republish a book, you need to get it into a digital format.  This means scanning each page of the book unless you want to hire someone to type it for you.

4. You have to edit the content of the book.  After you get it back from the scanners you will have a lot of editing to do because they don't scan it in a format that you can use.  They put one page of your book onto one page in a Word document.  This means that to even use it you have to spend hours making each line use the whole page.  Here's an example of a page that I got back from a scanner:
   
                                   
    

5. You have to write the sales materials.  After that, you will need to hire a copywriter to write a sales letter to help you sell the book.  Good copywriters charge between $3000 and $10,000 for ONE SALES LETTER!   

And those are the reasons that everyone isn't doing it.
